Risperdal Gynecomastia Reports Among Young Boys Add To The Drug’s Troubled History
Written by Stephen Fields on April 28, 2015
According to a growing a number of angry families, Johnson & Johnson’s popular antipsychotic Risperdal does more harm than good. Worse, the manufacturer failed to sufficiently warn parents about the drug’s potential side effects. Evidence suggests a potential Risperdal breast growth connection in young boys.
The medication was approved in 1994. It’s currently prescribed to treat a number of mental and neurodevelopmental disorders. Adolescent boys who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism take Risperdal to help control their symptoms.
Unfortunately, therapy may stimulate an unexpected side effect: gynecomastia (male breast growth). Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals are now the target of hundreds of Rispderal lawsuit claims.
Risperdal breast development in boys can have a traumatic psychological impact. Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital found that the condition often provokes issues involving self-esteem, social functioning and general mental health. Johnson & Johnson Settles With 36 States For $181 Million
The manufacturer is no stranger to legal controversy or Risperdal settlements. The company has settled multiple lawsuits citing allegations over the aggressive manner in which it has marketed its drug.
In 2012, J&J paid $181 million to 36 states and the District of Columbia to settle charges that it improperly promoted its drug for unapproved, off-label uses.1 Many states alleged the company engaged in fraudulent marketing activities, such as compensating doctors to prescribe Risperdal off-label.
That settlement was preceded by a number of judgments against Johnson & Johnson over the same type of dubious activity. In 2011, a South Carolina judge ordered the company to pay $327 million for claiming Risperdal was superior to other drugs in its class.2 Earlier that same year, a jury in Louisiana ordered the drug maker to pay $258 million for similar reasons. J&J appealed the latter ruling only to be rebuffed by the Louisiana appeals court.3
J&J Settles With DOJ For $2.2 Billion Over Risperdal Advertising
The largest Risperdal lawsuit settlement to date involving Johnson & Johnson finalized in 2013. The Department of Justice filed charges against the pharmaceutical giant after completing a criminal investigation into its marketing practices. The DOJ found that J&J gave kickbacks to physicians who agreed to prescribe Risperdal. The company also gave kickbacks to nursing homes that agreed to dispense the drug to their elderly patients.
Johnson & Johnson eventually settled the charges for $2.2 billion. Attorney General Eric Holder remarked that the company’s actions”jeopardized the health and safety of patients and damaged the public trust.”
J&J Should Have Warned Families About Risperdal Gynecomastia Risk
The drug maker also settled a number of Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit claims in 2012. The claims had been filed on behalf of young boys harmed by the drug. The lawsuits cited male breast growth, nipple discharge and other embarrassing side effects. Some adolescent boys reportedly underwent mastectomies to resolve their disfigurement.
Hundreds of additional Risperdal breast growth lawsuits are currently pending with the number growing each month. For many families, the J&J’s past legal troubles stemming from its deceptive marketing practices underscore its dishonesty about Risperdal’s safety. They claim the manufacturer should have warned them about the risk of gynecomastia. It is unknown how many young people have paid a steep price for the company’s lack of disclosure.
When It’s Time To Pursue A Risperdal Lawsuit Settlement
Johnson & Johnson has a long history of using aggressive marketing tactics to promote its drugs. Past investigations reveal that it’s willing to violate states’ laws in order to boost sales. Unfortunately, J&J’s dogged pursuit of profit may have put the safety of countless young boys at risk. Worse, evidence suggests the manufacturer knew about the risk, but chose to hide it rather than alert the public.
