Risperdal, or risperidone, is an anti-psychotic medication used to treat illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism. By many accounts, it is often effective in improving quality of life for individuals with these conditions.

Unfortunately, in a number of adolescent males, Risperdal has been associated with a traumatic and embarrassing side effect: gynecomastia, or male breast growth. This condition is characterized by a swelling of the breast tissue on one or both sides of the body, and can also involve enlargement of the areolas.

Although there are generally no physical health concerns associated with gynecomastia, it is unsurprising that young men suffering from this condition often experience a great deal of emotional stress.

One 2013 study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery noted that adolescent boys with this condition can experience “significant deficits” in their social functioning, self esteem, mental health, and eating behaviors.1

The Link Between Risperdal and Gynecomastia

Risperdal is known to elevate levels of a human hormone called prolactin. The condition of having high Prolactin levels is sometimes called “hyperprolactinemia.” Prolactin has numerous functions in the body, but most well-known is its role in lactation. During pregnancy, increased prolactin levels cause the breasts to enlarge and milk to be produced.

This is, of course, an important biological function. Unfortunately, when prolactin levels are raised outside of pregnancy, such as by a drug like Risperdal, unwanted side effects can result.

Individuals taking Risperdal have reported both unwanted breast enlargement, or gynecomastia, and galactorrhea, or spontaneous lactation. According to the National Insititutes of Health, “risperidone administered to adolescents at doses commonly used for the treatment of psychotic symptoms can strongly increase prolactin levels, with clinical consequences such as gynecomastia and/or galactorrhea.” 2

Risperdal Lawsuits

In response to the pain and suffering gynecomastia has caused their children, a number of families have opted to file lawsuits against the maker of Risperdal. The antipsychotic drug, they argue, causes unusual breast growth which caused psychological harm to numerous young men. These families also assert that Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Risperdal, was negligent in failing to warn them about the drug’s risks.
